Almost every other friend I meet recommends Hoodia Gordonii pills. They say the pills work wonders for them. They say the pills make them lose lots of weight. They say the pills suppress their appetite and have no side-effects. They claim the pills don’t make them eat for three days.
They praise the pills like they praise Jesus.
So is Hoodia Gordonii pill the silver bullet to help you lose weight?
I’m always skeptical of diet pills. In fact, I’m skeptical of anything that makes extraordinary claims. Someone once said “extraordinary claim requires extraordinary evidence”.
Is there any shred of evidence that Hoodia Gordonii pills work?
To answer this question, the skeptical side of me did some preliminary research. What I find ten minutes later about Gordonii pills is no surprise. The only surprise is how the masses are gullible enough to believe that Gordonii pills work.
But then again it isn’t that surprising. If you can make people believe that man has never landed on the moon, you can make them believe anything.
As an attempt to liberate the misguided masses, I create a list of 3 reasons why they should flush their Gordonii pills down the toilet.
1) No Research to prove Hoodia Gordonii pills work
I search for Hoodia Gordonii research at two authoritative sites – PubMed and Google Scholar. PubMed churns out 2 results, while Google Scholar 71. A quick look at the results reveals no clinical trials to prove the extraordinary claims that Hoodia Gordonii pills suppress appetite or make you lose weight.
So the claim that Hoodia Gordonii pills suppress appetite and make you lose weight are unfounded.
2) Inadequate evidence to prove Hoodia Gordonii pills work
Many sites pushing Gordonii pills cite three studies to support the magical properties of Gordonii pills – the Goldfarb study , Phythopharm study and the Rat Brain study. All the studies support the claims but I deem them inadequate.
Goldfarb Study
The Goldfarb study is a small study which assigns seven overweight participants to take Hoodia Gordonii capsules twice a day. The study reports an average 3.3% loss of bodyweight after 28 days.
Three reasons why you should not take the finding as proof:
i) Study is unpublished in peer-reviewed scientific journal.
ii) Small sample of 7 participants.
iii) Study not double-bind.
Pythopharm Study
The 2001 Pythopharm study reports that healthy but overweight volunteers taking extracts of Hoodia Gordonii pills lose more body fat and eat less calories than those who take a placebo.
Sounds impressive. But is this evidence?
I search for this particular study’s research paper in PubMed, Google, Google scholar and even at Pythopharm site. I found no research paper.
Either I haven’t searched hard enough, the research paper not made public, the paper not published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, or the research paper does not exist.
Until I can review the research paper, it’s like you asking me to believe in little green men because you have evidence of their existence, but you won’t show me the evidence.
Rat Brain Study
This study attempts to understand the mechanism of the alleged appetite-suppressing property of P57, the molecule Hoodia Gordonii plants claimed to contain.
Whatever the results of this study, you may want to take this study on rats with a grain of salt.
Unless of course, you’re Master Splinter.
3) Anecdotal evidence is mixed
The lack of research forces me to review anecdotal evidence. I scour the internet for anecdotes on Gordonii pills.
As expected, all the sites that push Hoodia Gordonii pills contain positive reviews and testimonies. Anecdotes at weight loss forums and blogs are mixed. Some claims they lose weight on the pills, others don’t.
The problem with anecdotes is you can find anecdotes to prove any point. You just need to know where to find them or pay someone to create one. To base your decision on purely anecdotal evidence is not entirely rational.
Even if the pills work as claimed, what will happen if you stop taking them? Are you going to take the pills for the rest of your life to maintain your weight? Is it safe to take the pills long term?
3 reasons, 3 damning reasons why you should not take the pills. Now will the Hoodia-Gordonii-pills-popping masses wake up from their gullibility?
