Atkins must be laughing in his grave. A recent study proves you lose 80% more weight on his low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet than on three other popular diets – the Zone, Ornish and LEARN diets.
The comparative study by Stanford University Medical School randomly assigns 311 obese women to follow Atkins, Zone, Ornish or LEARN diets. Each group receives weekly instruction for two months and a ten-month follow up. After twelve months, the women’s weight and metabolic markers are compared.
Atkins Trounces the Rest
The study finds that overweight and obese women on Atkins diet significantly lose more weight than those on the other three diets.
And get this. Those on Atkins diet have more favourable overall metabolic effects than those on the other diets. In other words, those on Atkins are metabolically “healthier” than the non-Atkins.
So Should you Follow Atkins to Lose Weight?
I’ve not read the full study, so I can’t really say. However, take note that this study does not tell you if the women maintain their weight AFTER the study. You can’t be sure if the women do not gain back what they lose plus another 20 pounds!
