In my previous post Why Fat Women are Grumpy, I mention a study that finds a link between your waist circumference and mental health. The study concludes that a monster waistline makes you more prone to mood disorders and depression.
Based on this study, I find it no surprise that many of my fat friends are grumpy or sick in the head.
However, a new study seems to contradict this finding. This study finds that a greater Body Mass Index is associated with a reduced risk of major psychiatric illnesses like depression, schizophrenia and suicide.
In other words, the fatter you are, the better is your mental health.
The BMI study sampled 7036 men and 8327 women aged 45-64 years old , while the waistline study sampled only 217 obese women aged 18-75 years old. It seems that the BMI study is more valid since its conclusion is based on a much larger and more diverse sample.
However, if we take both study as valid, the best way to protect yourself from mental illnesses is to have a high BMI and a tiny waistline.
I can only think of one group of people on this planet that exhibits both characteristics – the bodybuilders.
Bodybuilders have high BMIs and tiny waistlines. Take my bodybuilder boyfriend for example. He’s 1.7 meters tall and weighs 100 kg. His BMI is 35 – an obese by definition. But if you’ve slept with him like I did many times, you’ll know that he’s far from obese.
In fact, he’s rock-hard everywhere. His body fat is less than 5%.
My boyfriend also confirms both studies. Since I first I met him, I’ve never seen him moody or depressed. He’s always happy and light-hearted. So are his bodybuilder friends. No doubt some of his friends are mental jerks, but more often than not most of these muscleheads are a bunch of happy people.
Here’s the bottom line. A high BMI coupled with a tiny waistline is good for your mental health. So build muscle and burn belly fat.

The only reason why they … ahem … why I’d be grumpy is because of my need to lose weight
But then again, thin people are gumpy too because they are hungry …
